The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca; Chinese 大熊猫; pinyin dàxióngmāo), also known as the panda bear or simply the panda, is a bear native to south central China. It is characterised by large, black patches around its eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. The name giant panda is sometimes used to distinguish it from the red panda, a neighboring musteloid.The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a mammal species native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China.It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List because the wild population is estimated at fewer than 10,000 mature individuals and continues to decline due to habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and inbreeding depression. Despite its name, it is not closely related to the giant panda.
